I can't believe it's Christmas Eve already.

This has been an exciting year for me with the publication of several short stories, as well to see my series, The Heart Of Winter do so well.

I want to say thank you to all the readers who have sent me words of encouragement, expressed enjoyment with my work, and who have taken the time and money to buy my books.

As a writer, there is no greater joy then to see someone "love" the characters and the stories that are close to your own heart.

So, with a heartfelt THANK YOU I want to say:

Thanks Renee for the awesome giveaway!

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Revelation, book 3 of the 4 part The Heart Of Winter series, was released today by Evernight Publishing.

Winter’s reclusive life as a romance writer begins to collide with Cayden’s larger-than-life world.  Cayden Cain, Hollywood’s hottest heartthrob, is someone who is unattainable in many ways.  The odds of a real relationship with him are astronomical.
Besides the pesky paparazzi that are hell-bent on exposing pieces of her once private life, there is so much more conspiring against Winter and Cayden.  She cannot survive in his world, and he simply cannot walk in hers.   But everything will change when she discovers their worlds have always been connected, forever tied together by fate, by destiny, by unbreakable love.

Just a few places to find Revelation:

I’m super stoked to have the author of Waking The Dead, Renee Silvana here with me today.  She has graciously agreed to allow me to pick her brain. *Smiles*

Renee, tell us a little about yourself and how you became a writer.
Like many writers, creating stories has always been a part of who I am. Before I could read, it started with making up stories based on the pictures of the books I was so frustrated I couldn't actually read. I dabbled in fanfiction in my teen years (and I just searched, it's still posted online... eek!). Happily-ever-afters were a huge part of my writing back then, and as I've grown, so have my characters.... and so have their needs. ;)

What genre/genres do you prefer to write?
I write mainly paranormal because I LOVE world-building. I like making rules to suit the needs of my characters and my story. Recently though, I've been seriously considering historical...

What words best describe your writing style?
Dark and sensual. I try to tamp down the darkness, but it's a big part of who I am!

Where did you find the inspiration to write Waking The Dead?
I had already developed my hunky Adrian and what his duties were. But Miriam I struggled with.. how was I going to bring these two together? One day, just for fun, I was playing with a story generator and the phrase "an inept necromancer" popped up. The rest of the sentence was gibberish, but those two words sparked the entire story of Waking The Dead!

Here is a little taste of Waking The Dead:
As a guardian of the gate to the spirit world, hellhound Adrian Mason is responsible for apprehending errant necromancers, and now he has his hands full with a demon on the loose. When all evidence points to Miriam Spencer, she swears she's not to blame. Though she is descendent from a family of powerful witches, Miriam can barely divine answers from a magic eight ball, let alone raise spirits.

But, if she's not the culprit, then who—or what—is wreaking havoc on the small upstate New York town? Falling for his prime suspect isn’t on Adrian’s agenda. Duty-bound and with time running short, he must bring Miriam to justice, or face his own.
Great excerpt!
I love listening to music.  And I find I usually pick out certain songs or certain artists to set the tone or mood of books I’m writing.  Do you do anything special to get into the “mood” when writing?
Music is a big part of it for me! The opening sequence was written to Opeth's song "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" played on repeat... over and over again. iTunes recorded the number, and it is ridiculously high.
What has been your biggest obstacle to overcome in writing/getting your work out there?
It's very difficult for me to just relax, and hence I have chronic writer's block. Waking The Dead took over a year to complete because of that, but I knocked out a 17,000-word story in about a week and a half when I was uber-relaxed and living in the Grand Canyon in September. I don't think I've written that many words since then!

Sweet or Erotic?
It depends. Really strong characters, compelling conflict and superb world-building are what appeal to me. A weak erotic story can't hold a candle to a strong sweet romance. But all other things equal, I'd take erotic hands-down!

What’s the last book you read?
I just finished "Freya's Mates" by Stacey Espino and I'm starting "The Last Princess." Oh. My. Gosh. If you haven't picked it up yet, here's a great opportunity to make your night a whole lot better and sexier!
I’ve read Freya’s Mates.  I think Stacey is a super talented writer and loved the book :D
Are you working on anything new? And if so, what can fans expect to see in the near future?
I am working on an historical, that's out of the bag. I'm almost finished with the second book in the Hounds of Annwyn series (as in, I'm over 18,000 words and about 3,000 beyond where I thought it would be!), but the H/h of that book have me struggling to do them justice.

If you were given one wish, a chance to change a single event from your past, present, or future, would you?

When Dylan arrives home to reconcile with her father before the Grim Reaper comes to sweep him away, she is given that exact opportunity. But the gift of one wish doesn’t come without a clear warning: “Everything in this life has a consequence. What you choose today could alter what might already be.”

With so many options to choose from, Dylan has to do some major soul searching and only has three months to decide. Should she take the risk of a wish that might not actually bring her happiness or leave her life in the hands of fate?

“Cole, what do you want to be when you grow up?” Her small hand fit perfectly in his as they lay on a blanket in the back of his beat-up pickup truck, parked at the rear of her father’s ranch. They looked up at the stars plastered across the late night sky.
“I don’t know. Something important, someone that people depend on,” he answered.
“Do you know what I want to be?” Dylan turned her face toward his.
“An actress?” he teased.
“No. Guess again.”
The moon cast a silver glow down upon them, and her eyes shone in its light when she spoke.
“A singer on Broadway? Maybe a dancer in Milan?” He laughed, knowing his ridiculous answers would annoy her.
“No. I want to design fashion some place amazing like New York. I want to see my name on the clothes that people wear. But do you know what I want more than fame and fortune?” She smiled at him.
“No.” He moved closer.
“I want to be your wife.” Her lips were inches from his, her breath sweet across his face. “I want to have lots of kids and a huge dog. We can have a summer home here in Texas, so we can visit our families.”
“That sounds like a pretty big wish list.” He laughed again, glad they both wanted the same basic things from life. “I can’t make you famous, but I could help you with all the other things you want.”
Dylan giggled, letting him pull her into his arms.

My Story, The Proposal

Lowly executive assistant Grace Hale is having a bad day.  Perhaps epically bad, until Dravin Hall, the scorching hot advertising legend, and one of the owners of the agency, invites her for drinks to discuss a proposal.  Maybe her Christmas gift will come early this year.  But one thing’s for sure.  She will never be able to go into The Fireside Grill again without blushing.

Author Shyla Colt

Shyla Colt is a Sound and Lighting Engineer turned Stay-At-Home Mom with two main passions, music and the written word.  Her stories are a blend of the paranormal laced with humor, passion, and a “je ne se qua” that she’d like to call all her own.
Married to her marine, she currently resides in sunny California where she allows her characters to tell her their stories while feeding her music addiction and raising her wild child.  She credits John Hughes, Marvel comics, punk music and the first paranormal romance novel she picked up at thirteen for creating the unique muse that drives her.

In the spotlight: Wolf in Waiting
Blackburn Falls Series, Book 1

A shape shifter unable to shift and a male shifter next in line for the throne shouldn’t mix, but the passion between them transcends all.

A shape shifter who can’t shift sounds like a punch line to a joke. But for Luz Dryden it’s a complicated reality. The one bright light in her life has been her long-time love Kalyx Hunter.

Kalyx shares her strange malady and worships Luz with a passion that overshadows everything else. When Kalyx shifts unexpectedly, Luz flees Blackburn Falls and vows to never look back.

Five years later she’s forced back to her home town for her sister’s wedding, and Kalyx is determined to convince her they belong together. Luz fights him at every turn, but her body’s needs overrides her will.

Kalyx is prepared to take on anyone who tries to keep them apart. But neither anticipated the twisted web of deceit and betrayal they would find themselves tangled in.

A sane person would close the window and head back to bed, but the passion he aroused refused to be denied. She would deal with the consequences of tonight tomorrow after the smoldering fire had been extinguished. The smell of dark spice increased and her center responded with a flow of liquid running down the inside of her thighs as her center pulsed. Her walls contracted with every breath she took. Her sensitive body begged for relief and in a blink she went from the hunted to the hunter. A smirk graced her full lips as she slowly unbuttoned the silk shift irritating her overly sensitive skin.
Lingerie had always been a guilty secret, and she knew from past experience he loved to watch her take it off. She shoved the offending material off her shoulders to the floor and ran her fingers up her flat stomach to cup her full breasts and begin a rough massage. Her long fingers elicited moans, pinching and pulling, the erotic site set his eyes aglow with passion.
"Like that, don't you?" she teased, a husky chuckle spilling forth when he nodded.
In need of more stimulation she untied the bows of her panties one by one and lifted a leg onto the sill to bare her slick center. More moisture streamed down her thighs as his growl of admiration made her spread her lips to reveal the pink petal inside. Past the point of a staged performance she cried out as she buried two fingers deep inside and went to work. Hard, sure pumps had her hips snapping forward. She forced her eyes to remain open as she rubbed her swollen clit in circles, and her pussy rippled as an orgasm roared through her body.
Her mouth opened in a silent scream echoed aloud by his hearty howl of approval. Coming down from her high, she was grateful for the click of the light in the room beside her own, chasing him off into the night. Her head rested against the coolness of the window and she knew the concept of being over Kalyx Hunter was nothing more than a carefully constructed lie.

I’m happy to be here today with author Kacey Mark to talk about her latest book, A Muse Gone Commando, which is part of her Dark Muse series from Evernight Publishing.

Perhaps Kyla Spades is a bit hasty to assume she finally escaped her stalkers. As a Muse, they come with the job description. Hunt down those desperate for inspiration, soak up a bit of their soul, and earn a ravenous groupie for life. That’s about how it worked, and after twenty-eight years, Kyla should know that.
Her past chases her to the quiet town of Sterling Springs, and Kyla must seek refuge with the only other muse of her kind. Tobin Blake, infamous womanizer by night, accused serial killer by day.
Tobin knew he should’ve sent her away the moment she appeared at his door. With his enemies planning their demon uprising any day, and his leg still suffering from the last attack, he couldn’t afford the distraction—even if it came with cherry lacquered toes and a body that begged to be sampled.
With the enemy closing in, Tobin and Kyla must find strength in each other as they battle for secrets to Kyla’s past and the future of their kind.

Let’s just jump right in.  Kacey, A muse Gone Commando is book 2 in the series, is that correct?
Thank you so much for letting me join today and yes, this is the second of a two book series.
I know an author should really love all her book-babies equally, but this second book is my favorite so far. Shhh! Don't tell the others!
Mum’s the word!
Tell us a little bit about how you came to write this book series.
I started out with my affectionately named, buff-and-grumpy-alpha, Quention. He had an aire of control and deception that made him dangerous, but when he started mind raping the young and influential artists of our time, I knew we had to find out why he did the things he did. I also had to figure out how to redeem him. That's pretty much how the dark muses were born. From the inside out.
Dose each book stand on its own, or should they be read in order?
They both stand pretty well on their own. Two separate stories about two polar opposite brothers. I always recommend reading them in succession through, because it's so fun experiencing the villain in book one become the hero in book two. He made for such a sexy villain I just couldn't let him die!

Here’s a taste of A Muse Gone Commando:
Standing mere inches from her, he rocked back on his good heel. “She always this bashful?”
Kyla felt the weight of Amber’s damp hand on her shoulder as if clinging for support, and her voice slurred a bit when she spoke. “You kidding? Kyla’s a livewire.”
Kyla’s mouth dropped open. “That’s none of his business.”
“Live wire, huh,” he murmured.
Amber opened her mouth again, but her voice cut short with a sharp jab from Kyla’s elbow.
“Enough about me. Where’d you want to do this?” Kyla asked.
Kyla pushed out a sigh of frustration. “Okay, Count Happy Pants, get serious.” She stretched her body to peer around the sharp curve of one hallway. “There’s got to be a couch or a chair around here somewhere.”
Amber poked her in the ribs. “What’s gotten into you, Ky? You don’t have to be so rude.”
Kyla knew that look. It was Amber’s patient provider relationship taking a swan dive into a murky pool of sexual intrigue. She lifted her brows in mock sympathy. “Amber? Work with me, here. I’m getting this over with and you out of this place before you do something you’ll regret.”
Kyla ignored the prissy flap of Amber’s hands as she sandwiched Amber’s face between her palms and leveled it with hers. Sizing up her swollen pupils, she could tell Amber wouldn’t be going anywhere soon.
“No. On second thought, let’s skip the session altogether,” Kyla said.
“I can’t believe you’re suggesting that I would—”
“I know. I know.” She sighed as she rummaged through Amber’s purse. “Where are your keys, woman?”
“There’s no need to rush off. After coming all this way, I couldn’t let you ladies leave so soon. We were just getting to know each other.”
After several minutes of quiet observation, the sound of his voice made Kyla’s heart switch to high speed. She spun to face Tobin, who had closed the distance to a dangerous level. The warmth of his breath flowed over her cheek. She jumped back, but didn’t get far with Amber standing behind her. She bumped into her friend with an oomph and staggered to maintain her balance.
Tobin’s lips twitched and he continued his pursuit, inching closer.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
Kyla’s eyes grew wide. Freaky house with freaky impaired womanizer, that’s what she signed up for. That’s what she could deal with. Not an all-powerful Muse hell-bent on stealing her soul.
“Okay, okay, I lied. I really do have the plague,” Kyla said.
The statement didn’t seem to faze him as his gaze lowered to her mouth.
He wouldn’t!
She made a strangled sound in the back of her throat. The magnetic hold he placed on Amber didn’t carry any weight against another Muse, but the threat of what lay below his surface left her petrified.
She tented her brows in a plea for mercy, even as her soul thrashed and clawed at the puckered barrier of her subconscious. Kyla’s nails dug into her palms as she mentally clenched her inner wall tighter against the assault.
Leave it. Leave it!
Early on, she’d developed her ability to compromise and reason with her starving soul. Only allowing it enough to get by without causing any undue damage. But with the knowledge of completion standing only a breath away, all that dieting unleashed a frenzy she hadn’t anticipated.
Forget Tobin Blake. Amber’s right. Kyla was scary all by herself.
She knew, or at least hoped, that Tobin couldn’t detect the tantrum her inner self was throwing. She didn’t know how much more stress she could take, being attacked from both sides, and the thought of all her defenses being torn away made her panic jump to new heights. Cursing her insatiable hunger for fear, every muscle in her body grew tense in an attempt to stay intact. She held her breath, ready for him to strike the first blow.
But he didn’t.
His head dipped until his lips were mere inches from hers.
And he waited.
When her lungs burned for lack of oxygen, she expelled a shaky breath. Then, with only the faintest lift of his lower lip, he blew a hot puff of air over her mouth.
Kyla’s breath caught in her throat, and she wrinkled her brow. The smell of toffee and sun-ripened peaches curled around her. With an uncontrollable urge to breathe it in, her lungs stretched to capacity, trying to lift every hint of that scent from the air.
This wasn’t the way it worked; this wasn’t right.
For the first time, she had no idea who she was dealing with. Tobin Blake may be her mate, but he certainly wasn’t her equal. How could she compete against this?
He pulled away from her in slow motion, eyes lit in a menacing smile as the world tipped and spun out of control. Then her face made a dive for the hardwood floor.

What was the hardest part of this story to write?
The hardest part about this story was getting our been-with-everyone-and-done-it-everywhere Tobin to find a lasting intrigue with only one woman. Sure, she was his completion, but once complete I wanted their story to have a happily ever after forever. Not just until the end of the book. I had to find something hidden inside him that he was afraid to show to any other woman and let Kyla be the one to find it.
That's where a touch of...ah...foot fetishism came into play.
And I didn't know anything about that!
Fortunately Google was my friend haha!
*Smiles* Gotta love Google!
How would you explain your writing style?
I fly by the seat of my pants mostly. I seem happiest when I don't know how things will turn out and I experience it as it comes onto the page.
What genre/genres do you write in? And what attracts you to that genre?
Strictly Paranormal Romance so far. I like to incorporate impossibilities and make them possible.
Who are some of your favorite authors who inspire you?
Gena Showalter is a riot! I love her. Katie McAllister too. I love their voices and their humor.
I love Gena, too. :D
Do you have a favorite character that you have written about? What makes him/her your favorite?
I like Kyla best from A MUSE GONE COMMANDO. She's spunky and resourceful but she still has a lot to learn. Fortunately she has the best and worst teacher there is to offer. :-)
As writers I believe we tend to put pieces and parts of ourselves into our writing, even if its pieces of what we wish we could be.  Do you find pieces of yourself in any of your writing?
I do. I tend to incorporate my snarky side between my heroes and heroines. In writing, you get to say all the things you should have said in real life arguments. No walking away and kicking yourself because you should have said something else.
What does sexy mean to you?
It means being brave and capable about exploring your world and inviting others do the same. Whether in dress, language or action, there is an aire of confidence and welcome that makes other people feel drawn to you.
Tell us, what other works you’ve got in store for us this coming year.
I have a Merry-go-round-ran-down inspired ghost story that you can check out on my website under the works in progress section. It's pretty tasty!
I will check it out.  Love ghost stories.
Thanks so much for stopping by, Kacey.  I wish you great success with your book and with your Dark Muse series.  Please come back anytime and visit.
Well thank you for having me *curtseys*
